Q: How can I prevent kidney stones?

A:
With the changes in diet in the last 100 years, kidney stones are 10 times more prevalent now than at the turn of the centruy. There are, however, ways to reduce your chances of developing kidney stones: 1. Eat less meat. 2. Drink plenty of fluids, but limit consumption of grapefruit juice and soda, as studies have shown that these may actually increase risk of developing stones. 3. A diet high in potassium and magnesium may decrease the likelihood of kidney stones. 4. Speak with your physician about taking supplements like pyridoxine and magnesium. Taken together, these reduce oxalate, a mineral salt found in kidney stones. 5. Limit your calcium and salt intake.
