A: Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria that certain types of ticks carry, especially deer ticks in the Northeast. You contract Lyme disease when bitten by an infected tick. A bulls-eye rash pattern resulting from the tick bite is commonly associated with Lyme disease and there are flu-like symptoms. You should check carefully for ticks after hiking or walking in wooded or grassy areas.
