Hematology
Hematology is the study of blood, the blood-forming organs and blood diseases. A hematologist, a physician specializing in diseases of the blood and bone marrow, focuses on the treatment and care of hematological diseases that affect the production of blood and its components, such as hemophilia, anemia, sickle cell, leukemia and lymphoma. Q: What is a BRCA test?

A:
A BRCA test is a genetic test to see if a woman is carrying a mutation of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene. These mutations increase the likelihood that a patient will develop breast or ovarian cancer. Most women do not need this test. It is only recommended for women who have a strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer. Before a patient decides to have a BRCA test done, it is critical that the patient fully discuss the test with a health care provider who is experienced in cancer genetics and who can explain all the pros and cons of testing.
