A: High blood cholesterol signals a higher risk of heart attack and stroke. That is why it is important to have your cholesterol levels checked regularly and discuss them with your doctor. Your total cholesterol level should be less than 200mg/dL. Above this number and your risk increases. Your HDL (good) cholesterol level should be 60mg/dL and above. Anything lower can be dangerous to your health. Your LDL (bad) cholesterol level should be less than 100mg/dL. As the number gets higher, your risk of heart disease increases.
