November is American Diabetes Month

There are two types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2.  Type 1, also known as juvenile diabetes, is generally diagnosed in children and young adults.  With type 1, the body does not produce insulin that is needed to convert sugar into energy.  Only 5% of the population with diabetes has this type.  Type 2 diabetes is the most common form and occurs when either the body does not produce enough insulin or the body’s cells ignore or reject the insulin.  Type 2 diabetes is also known as adult-onset diabetes and is frequently found in adults who may be less physically active or have a family history of diabetes and obesity.

In the United States today, there are 25.8 million children and adults living with diabetes and another 79 million at high risk for developing diabetes.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated that:

  • Every 17 seconds an individual is diagnosed with diabetes
  • Diabetes kills more people each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined
  • Recent studies project that 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050

Diabetes is often undiagnosed in the early stages, as the initial symptoms are harmless and undetected, but early detection and treatment can decrease a person’s risk of future complications.  Diabetes can lead to heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness and amputation.

The Integrative Nutrition Department at Manhattan’s Physician Group offers a monthly group diabetes self-management program in which individuals meet in a group setting with a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator for diabetes self-management education and training.  We also offer FREE diabetes lectures with the Certified Diabetes Educator where individuals and their families can learn about diabetes, treatment and tests, symptoms, meal planning and physical activities and receive helpful resources.

Take action today to prevent or treat diabetes.
