Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States with one in every three deaths from heart disease and stroke. Heart disease is the number one killer of women. More women die each year from heart disease than all types of cancer combined.
Eating a heart healthy diet comprised of fresh fruit and vegetables, low in salt and trans fat, being physically active, getting adequate sleep and not smoking are great ways to become heart healthy. Walking 30 to 60 minutes every day is an easy way to get started and it provides heart health benefits.
It is also important to pay attention to the types of fat in your diet. Saturated and trans fats will raise your LDL or “bad” cholesterol and lower HDL or “good” cholesterol. Focus on eating plant-based foods like nuts, seeds, avocado and olive oil as sources of heart healthy mono- and poly- unsaturated fats.
Take action today to become more heart healthy. Work with our registered dietitians to learn how to reduce your weight and decrease your cholesterol and blood pressure through a health-promoting diet and regular physical activity.
